Day 108/365 - Wendy

Thursday, April 1!

What a beautiful day!
The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the balls were bouncing. Tennis balls, that is.

I worked until noon so the morning went by decently quickly. About halfway through my shift I received a text message from my friend,Kurt, asking if I wanted to play a little tennis today. I was super excited because both of my classes were canceled today so I actually had time to play! I left work (took out my windows), ran home, and got my shorts, shoes, and a racket and I jumped back into the car (after dropping the top) and drove on over to the courts. I had to wait a few short minutes before Kurt arrived, and then we got to playing.

It's been so long since I last played so I'm a little rusty. I could feel my wrist bending and moving, so I tried to work on keeping it straight and keeping my shots forward. I lost the first set by a lot, due to all of the problems I was having, but I wasn't going to let that ruin the second set. I was doing quite well, up by a pair of games, when the tennis team showed up, and we had to leave. We were playing on the high school courts because they are the most easily accessible and well kept courts around (I would rather play on the UB courts but they are always locked). So, alas, we had to say goodbye and part ways.

I came home and decided to not waste the beautiful sun and natural light that was outside, so I took my camera outside and did a little walking about. I finally settled on this shot of Wendy because I liked the angle and light in the photograph. It seems like a bit of a generic car shot: stay low to the ground, three quarter view. I dropped the saturation a bit to dull the sky and turn signal reflectors and give it a more uniform look.

I've been looking into getting a nice set of strobes so that I can take my ideas and more fully realize them. It's difficult working with natural light, unless it is just right, and it's not very helpful working with the two small, hardware store lights that I have because they only take 120 watt bulbs and don't really give enough light. I've been playing with the strobes at school a little bit and can already see how useful they can be. I've done a few tabletop setups (Day 99) as well as a few portraits, and I think they turned out really well. I also had a chance to play a little bit with lights and learn how to use them on the day I went to hang out with Tom. He has some really great lights and he really knows how to use them, so it's nice to work with him and to learn from him. I feel like strobes will also help with my film images because I'll be able to do more complex setups.

Looks like the next couple days are going to be really nice so I'm looking forward to it.

Also, I finished my last couple gum prints for my senior thesis the other day. Now I just have a bunch of blueprints to draw up and copy before the show. It opens April 23 at the Pierce-Arrow Building at 7pm. So excited.

More later.

Keep it going,
keep it real.
The road only goes two way,
and nobody wants to go back.
